Principal's Message

November 1st, 2025

Hello Resnik Families,

We have had a wonderful and eventful first quarter of our school year!  During our first few weeks, scholars have been learning about behavior expectations as essential agreements in the classrooms, chromebook care, restrooms, hallways, cafeteria, along with arrival and dismissal procedures. We had our first PBIS behavior fair highlighting each of these areas, and rolling out our school wide Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports tickets.  Many classes have reached their point goals and continue to select their classroom celebrations!  Scholars have also practiced safety drills, lockdown procedures and tornado drills. It was wonderful seeing so many of you at our Father's Walk, Interim pick-up conference night, Trunk-or-Treat along with our grade level IB showcases across multiple grade levels!

Scholars have also completed their beginning of the year i-Ready assessments in reading and math, and students in grades 1-3 have completed literacy screeners.  Teachers use this information to provide specific and ongoing reading intervention and enrichment.  The best supports for this at home is reading to and with your scholar nightly for 15-20 minutes.  Reading aloud to students, even if they are reading on their own, sparks interest and enhances vocabulary.  It has been a busy start to the year and we are all looking forward to continuing to provide quality instruction in a positive environment.

Thank you to everyone that helped to kick-off our SchoolStore fundraiser.  Teachers have been happily utilizing their gift cards to purchase items for their classrooms, and we were able to purchase playground equipment for the entire school!  The fundraiser is open all year, consider browsing the store links for your upcoming holiday shopping for Resnik to continue to receive a percentage of the funds.  The more families that share via email, no shopping or purchases required, the higher percentage of sales we receive!

Dear APS Families,
We’re excited to share several new reading initiatives that our Superintendent is launching across our district this year on October 1. All are designed to foster a love of reading while promoting values such as kindness, empathy, confidence, and growth.
The first initiative, One District, One Theme at a Time, is a K–12 reading initiative through the Superintendent’s Book Club. Each quarter, students will explore a new theme through selected books: Starting Strong and Falling into Kindness, Caring and Sharing, Building Confidence from the Inside Out, and Growing Together as a Community. Schools with the most books read in K–5, 6–8, and 9–12 will win a traveling trophy to display proudly. Each winning school will add a unique symbol to the trophy, creating a special keepsake that celebrates their achievement.
The second initiative is for our 2nd and 3rd-graders. One District, One Book invites families to read Friendship According to Humphrey by Betty G. Birney. This charming story about a classroom hamster offers meaningful lessons about friendship and community. Students will read the book during their Library Resource Center time, accompanied by fun activities and opportunities to win prizes. We encourage families to join in at home and enjoy this shared reading experience together.
Finally, our youngest learners in PreK through 3rd grade can look forward to Once Upon a Storytime, premiering every Wednesday at 7 PM on the APS YouTube channel. Each week, special guest readers from our community will share their favorite children’s books, perfect for a cozy family story night at home.. Don’t miss the first episode on Wednesday, October 1, featuring a special guest reader, our very own Superintendent!
We’re looking forward to a joyful year of reading, learning, and growing together. Thank you for supporting your child’s journey through these exciting programs.

Warmly,

Mrs. Elizabeth Toppin

September 2025

Dear Resnik Families,
Our school will soon begin our initial i-Ready® diagnostic assessment. This assessment is utilized to help us better understand students’ strengths and areas for growth in Reading and Math. Testing will take place during the school day between Monday, September 8 – Thursday, September 25.

The i-Ready Diagnostic is an adaptive assessment, meaning it adjusts the difficulty of questions depending on how a student responds. Some questions may feel very easy, while others may feel too hard. This is intentional as the program is designed to pinpoint each child’s independent learning level. Please remind your child that it is okay to miss questions! Doing their best and working independently gives teachers the most accurate picture of their learning.

Once the assessment is complete, i-Ready provides teachers with detailed reports and personalized online lessons for students. These tools help guide instruction so every child is supported and challenged appropriately.

If you have questions, please reach out to your child’s teacher or our school office. For more information about i-Ready Diagnostic, you may also visit www.CurriculumAssociates.com.

Thank you for your partnership in helping our students grow!

August 2025

Good afternoon Resnik families! This is your principal, Mrs. Toppin. A building-wide all-call and email will also be going out shortly. Please check your email as it contains a wealth of links with our back-to-school information.

To clarify any confusion, Resnik Open House is tomorrow Wednesday, August 20th between 3-5pm. The front office will also begin collecting the first through fifth-graders Summer Bridge activity book provided by the district in the spring to reinforce reading and math skills. Through our valued partnership with Scholastic, the school with the highest percentage of completed activity books will win a special reward. Scholastic will create a pop-up bookstore at the winning school, and every student will get to select a free book to keep!

During Open House you will also meet your scholars teacher, meet our new staff members, join the PTA, visit the KONA Ice Truck and spend time with friends old and new!

The following day, Thursday, August 21st will be the first day of school for students in 1st through 5th grade, and begin our Kindergarten screener appointments. If you have not done so already, please call the school to schedule an appointment for your kindergartener screener appointments. Kindergarten scholars will have their first day of school on Monday, August 25th. As school is in session, no family members will be permitted into the building past the main office.

The school day is from 8:30 - 2:30 with breakfast being served beginning at 7:50 am. Scholars will not be permitted into the building prior to 7:50 am and will not be supervised by staff prior to this time. Regular attendance at school is vital to each scholar’s current and future success. Please make every effort to have your scholar at school every day, on time.

A friendly reminder that our building's parking lot can get congested during drop-off and pick-up times. I have included our arrival and dismissal procedures to the email. Please follow staff guidance to allow a smooth flow of traffic and support one-another with kindness and patience as new families become familiar with the processes in place that ensure safety and efficiency.

We hope that you have had a wonderful summer and are rested and excited as you gear up for a new school year!
